Don’t Give Up On Me
I once knew this little girl
with a creative streak a mile wide
She loved to read, and sing, and live
there was nothing she wouldn’t try
But then that little girl grew up
and discovered a big, mean world
There was less time to read, and no songs to sing
and living scared that naive little girl
She found out that love sometimes hurts more than helps
and more nights than not she would cry
The world beat down that young, vulnerable child
and the girl who’d loved life wanted to die
People told her she’d never felt love
She hurt deeper than they’d ever know
All books were fairy tales, and the love songs were lies
and life had dealt her a hand that left her all alone
I once knew this grown-up girl
with a streak of sadness a mile wide
she didn’t read, or sing, or laugh anymore
and there was no longer a reason to try
I’m sure you will meet her one of these days
one more girl with no reason to live
Please, read to her, sing with her, and share a laugh
Don’t ignore her, because she’s still got something to give
Don’t give up on me.
